Crop empty margins
Unused white space makes the actual page smaller. Crop it before changing anything else.
Most bad PDF experiences are really page-size problems. Fix the margins, layout and file size before blaming the screen.
THE SHORT VERSION
If the original PDF already contains selectable text, keep it as a PDF. Crop large margins, remove unnecessary pages and compress oversized images. Convert it only when the page layout is genuinely unusable on your device.
A PDF is a fixed page. Your E-Ink device is a fixed screen. When those shapes do not match, text becomes tiny, margins eat the display and zooming turns every page into work.
Crop margins first. If that is not enough, use landscape or reflow the source into EPUB.
Compress large scans and remove pages you do not need.
Avoid aggressive compression. Keep the original PDF and crop around the useful content.
Check how the file reached the device. On Kindle Scribe, transfer method affects PDF writing features.
THE FIVE-MINUTE CHECK
Unused white space makes the actual page smaller. Crop it before changing anything else.
Portrait documents suit most notebooks. Wide slides and spreadsheets usually work better in landscape.
Aim for comfortable body text at normal zoom. If you need to pinch every page, the file is not ready.
Reduce oversized images, but keep diagrams and small labels sharp enough to read.
Check a text page, an image, a table, a link and a page you plan to annotate.
DEVICE NOTES
Use Send to Kindle for the most complete document experience. Amazon supports PDF and EPUB files up to 200 MB through the service. PDFs copied by USB do not offer the same on-page writing support. Our Kindle Scribe review explains where the device works best.
Open Send to Kindle ↗Import PDF or EPUB through the desktop app, mobile app or web app. The web and USB routes support files up to 100 MB, while the companion apps can handle larger transfers. If reading competes with handwriting, see our Kindle Scribe vs reMarkable 2 comparison.
reMarkable transfer guide ↗PDF and EPUB files can arrive by USB, Supernote Cloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or the Partner app. Half Page View can enlarge dense PDFs on larger models, while Nomad uses landscape mode. The Supernote Manta evidence review covers the wider note-taking workflow.
Supernote document guide ↗BOOX devices are flexible, but that does not make a badly formatted page pleasant. Try the built-in crop, reflow and contrast controls before permanently changing the source file. Our BOOX Note Air5 C review looks at its PDF and app flexibility.

PDF conversion is not magic. Multi-column pages, scans, footnotes and complex tables often need manual cleanup. Keep the original file until you have checked the converted version.
BEFORE YOU SEND IT
It should open quickly, fit the screen, keep text readable and let you reach the next page without thinking about the file. If you notice the formatting more than the content, go back and crop before trying a more complicated conversion.
