THE SHORT VERSION
Do less conversion than you think.
If the original PDF already contains selectable text, keep it as a PDF. Crop large margins, remove unnecessary pages and compress oversized images. Convert it only when the page layout is genuinely unusable on your device.
Start with the problem you can actually see
A PDF is a fixed page. Your E-Ink device is a fixed screen. When those shapes do not match, text becomes tiny, margins eat the display and zooming turns every page into work.
Tiny text
Crop margins first. If that is not enough, use landscape or reflow the source into EPUB.
Slow page turns
Compress large scans and remove pages you do not need.
Fuzzy diagrams
Avoid aggressive compression. Keep the original PDF and crop around the useful content.
No handwriting tools

Prepare the file in this order
Match the screen
Portrait documents suit most notebooks. Wide slides and spreadsheets usually work better in landscape.
Keep text readable
Aim for comfortable body text at normal zoom. If you need to pinch every page, the file is not ready.
Compress carefully
Reduce oversized images, but keep diagrams and small labels sharp enough to read.
Test five pages
Check a text page, an image, a table, a link and a page you plan to annotate.

Keep it as PDF
- Manuals, forms and academic papers
- Documents with diagrams, tables or precise page references
- Anything you intend to annotate against the original layout
Convert to EPUB
- Long, mostly text-based documents
- Files where adjustable font size matters more than page numbers
- Reading material with simple headings and few images
PDF conversion is not magic. Multi-column pages, scans, footnotes and complex tables often need manual cleanup. Keep the original file until you have checked the converted version.
BEFORE YOU SEND IT
A good E-Ink PDF should feel boring.
It should open quickly, fit the screen, keep text readable and let you reach the next page without thinking about the file. If you notice the formatting more than the content, go back and crop before trying a more complicated conversion.
