This review covers the 2025 third-generation monochrome Kindle Scribe with a front light. We combined three video reviews, four professional written reviews and three owner comparisons, then checked the model against Amazon information.

THE SHORT VERSION
A brilliant Kindle with useful notes, rather than a brilliant notebook with Kindle books.
The third-generation Scribe combines an 11-inch, 300ppi monochrome screen with the Kindle library, adjustable lighting and a battery-free pen. Reading is its strongest skill, and the larger screen is especially useful for bigger type, PDFs, manga and documents.
Writing is quicker and more accessible than on earlier Scribes, but Amazon’s notebook organization and book annotation remain simpler than Supernote or reMarkable. Active Canvas can also rearrange book text around handwritten notes in ways some reviewers find distracting.

DISPLAY & DESIGN
A large Kindle screen that stays exceptionally sharp
The 11-inch Carta 1300 display shows text at 300 pixels per inch, so books and handwritten lines look crisp. The adjustable front light makes it far more flexible than notebooks without lighting, particularly in bed or dim rooms.
At about 400g and 5.4mm thick, the new Scribe is lighter and thinner than many 11-inch tablets. It is still much larger than a Paperwhite, so one-handed reading is not its natural role.
READING & WRITING
Reading comes first, and that shapes everything else
The Kindle store, Kindle Unlimited, adjustable type and familiar reading tools make Scribe effortless for books. The included pen needs no charging and the 2025 hardware is noticeably faster for writing and page turns than earlier generations.
Notebooks cover the basics, while handwriting recognition can clean up and summarize notes. Writing inside books uses Active Canvas or margins. Active Canvas moves text to make space for ink, which keeps notes attached to a passage but can make the page feel rearranged.
BATTERY
The safest battery choice among large writing tablets
Amazon rates battery life in weeks rather than days, with reading lasting much longer than frequent writing. Reviewers continue to treat battery life as a strength, although lighting, wireless use and heavy note-taking shorten it.

The third-generation Scribe is the easiest large E-Ink device to recommend to someone already invested in Kindle. Its screen, lighting, library and battery require very little explanation or setup.
Its writing tools are improving, but serious notebook users will still find better organization elsewhere. The Scribe wins when reading is the main habit and handwriting supports it.
