QUICK ANSWER
Pause important writing and refresh the page once.
Draw one short, unmistakable test stroke in a disposable note, wait a few seconds, then swipe up on the right sidebar to refresh the screen. If the stroke appears, the Manta captured it but displayed it late. Reopen the note and export a test copy before trusting the page with important work.
Restart the Manta normally once, move it away from magnets and nearby electronics, and check for the current stable update through Settings > System > Check. If strokes still appear only after refresh, or are absent from the reopened note and export, record a short video and send Feedback with system logs. Do not factory-reset or open the tablet for this symptom.
IS THE INK SAVED?
A stale screen and a missed stroke need different next steps
E-Ink keeps its last visible state until pixels are refreshed. That makes a display delay look like lost handwriting even when the note data was captured. The safest test is small and disposable: write a distinct mark, wait, refresh once, close and reopen the note, then export that test page if the controls still work.
Likely display delay
The stroke was captured but the E-Ink page did not redraw promptly. Continue with refresh, restart and stable-update checks.
Saved note, stale screen
Preserve the exported copy. The note data exists, but the live page is rendering late or incompletely.
Possible missed input
Stop important writing. Test the pen and screen separately, then send Supernote a video and logs.
Recent owner reports include temporary low-resolution ink that smooths after refresh, strokes that appear only after one or more refreshes, and menus that change internally without redrawing. Supernote's release history also records earlier fixes for handwriting that did not refresh in time. Those reports support this diagnosis, but they do not prove one current Manta-wide defect.
SAFE, REVERSIBLE CHECKS
Change one condition at a time
- Protect the notes you can still see.Stop adding important handwriting while the page is unreliable. Sync or export readable work through your normal trusted route, then confirm the copy opens before experimenting.
- Use one clean test note.Create a disposable built-in note and draw a few short lines. Do not diagnose the problem from a large imported PDF, a damaged note or a third-party app alone.
- Wait, then refresh once.Give the stroke a few seconds, then swipe up on the right sidebar. Note whether it appears, sharpens or stays absent. Repeated swipes may change the display without explaining the fault.
- Close and reopen the test note.If the mark returns after reopening, the saved note and live rendering disagree. If it is still missing, export the test page when possible to check whether the data exists beyond the screen.
- Restart normally once.Use the power menu and choose Restart. Let startup finish. Avoid a cycle of forced reboots because it adds risk without producing useful evidence.
- Remove local interference. For one test, move the Manta away from laptops, phones, wireless chargers, speakers, power banks and magnetic accessories. Supernote says these can disrupt EMR pen detection in a localized area.
- Compare the whole screen.Draw a loose grid in the disposable note without pressing hard. A single repeatable dead region points toward pen detection or interference; whole-page delayed redraws point more strongly toward rendering.
- Rule out extras without deleting them.Close sideloaded apps and repeat the built-in Note test. If the problem began after adding an app, report that fact. Do not clear the app's data or remove files just to troubleshoot.
REFRESH AND SOFTWARE
Use the stable release, not a downgrade experiment
Supernote's Manta and Nomad changelog shows that handwriting rendering has changed across releases. It lists fixes for strokes that did not refresh in time on some Mantas, delayed first-note refresh, accidental-rotation refresh problems and grayscale display issues. The current stable release on October 20, 2026 is Chauvet 3.30.45.
Check your installed version first. If an official stable update is offered, connect to Wi-Fi and use Settings > System > Check. Supernote's current update guide recommends this on-device route. Manual installation is a fallback for a device that cannot update normally and requires the exact Manta/Nomad package, left zipped.
Note whether Auto Refresh or screen rotation changes the symptom in the disposable note, then restore your preferred setting. Older release notes connect some refresh failures to those features, but toggling them is not a confirmed cure for every current report. If Chauvet 3.30.45 is already installed and the problem repeats, capture evidence instead of joining beta or attempting a downgrade.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Do not turn a display clue into a data-loss problem
- Do not keep writing important notes blindly. A stroke that appears after refresh is different from one the device never registered.
- Do not factory-reset as an opening step. It erases local settings and data without proving whether the fault is rendering, a note file, pen input or hardware.
- Do not clear Note app data or caches from generic Android advice. Supernote's public troubleshooting route does not require it, and local note data may be at risk.
- Do not install beta software for a production problem. Supernote warns that test releases can contain unexpected bugs and cannot be rolled back to an earlier version.
- Do not use an old firmware package or one for a similarly named device. Use the exact official Manta/Nomad stable package only when the normal update route is unavailable.
- Do not open the back cover, reseat cables or tighten screws unless Supernote gives case-specific instructions. A rendering symptom alone does not identify a loose connection, and unauthorized internal work can complicate warranty support.
WHEN TO STOP
Send a short reproduction instead of a long theory
Contact Supernote when the problem repeats in a clean built-in note after one normal restart, persists on the current stable release, affects menus as well as handwriting, or leaves strokes absent from the visible page, reopened note and export. Go straight to hardware support for fixed lines, black patches, impact damage, unusual heat, swelling or a screen that becomes unreadable.
Record a short video that shows the pen tip, the delayed or missing stroke, one manual refresh and the result. Note the Manta's full software version, whether Auto Refresh and rotation were on, whether third-party apps were active, and the exact time. Then open Settings > Feedback, describe the reproduction and include system logs. Use a private support channel for serial numbers or account details.
SOURCES AND LIMITS
What is confirmed
Supernote's current documentation and recent owner reports were checked on October 20, 2026. Supernote confirms the stable update route, several historical handwriting-refresh fixes, the effect of nearby magnets and electronics on localized EMR input, and Feedback as the escalation path. Owner reports show that delayed or hidden strokes have occurred in more than one form, but they do not establish prevalence, one cause or a guaranteed remedy. Yeinks has not reproduced the problem on hardware.
