reMarkable Paper Pro not charging or turning on?

Use reMarkable's stated power limits, compare one cable and one direct computer port, then stop if the battery still falls or the tablet stays dead. A factory reset cannot repair a charging fault.

QUICK ANSWER

Start with the exact power source reMarkable recommends.

Disconnect accessories, inspect the USB-C port and connect the Paper Pro with a known-good cable to either a 5-15W wall charger that does not exceed 5V and 3A, or a USB port on a working computer. Leave it connected without repeatedly pressing the power button. A static E-Ink image can remain visible while the tablet is off, so look for a charging icon, reading-light change or rising battery percentage rather than a changing screen alone.

If a computer port works but your wall setup does not, replace only the cable or power source that failed the comparison. If the percentage keeps falling while connected, the tablet becomes unusually warm, or there is still no response after an undisturbed charge and one controlled restart, stop and contact reMarkable. Do not drain it deliberately, open the case or factory-reset it.

READ THE SYMPTOMS

“Not charging” can describe four different states

Recent owners have reported a Paper Pro showing the charging symbol while its percentage continued to fall, a deeply discharged tablet that later recovered on a computer USB port, and recurring faults that eventually needed support. These reports establish that the symptom exists. They do not prove a single cause or tell us how often it happens.

Before changing anything, write down the starting battery percentage if it is visible, the time, the cable and source used, and whether the screen, reading light or computer changes when you connect it. A five-minute glance is not enough to diagnose a very low battery, but a percentage that falls during a controlled test is useful evidence.

No icon or light changeConnection not confirmed

Test a known-good cable, inspect the port and use a direct supported power source.

Charging icon, percentage risesCharging normally

Leave it connected and avoid judging progress from the static E-Ink image alone.

Charging icon, percentage fallsPower is not reaching the battery fast enough

Stop using the tablet, compare the official-rated source and a computer USB port, then record the result.

Warm, swollen or damagedPossible safety fault

Disconnect power, do not restart or open it, and contact reMarkable.

Stop for heat or physical damage.

If the tablet is swollen, unusually hot, smells odd, has liquid in the port or was recently bent or dropped, disconnect it. Do not keep testing chargers and do not ship a visibly damaged battery until support or the carrier gives safe instructions.

SAFE CHARGING CHECKS

Change one part of the charging path at a time

  1. Remove the Folio and Marker.Set the tablet on a dry, hard surface at room temperature. Make the power button and USB-C port easy to see.
  2. Inspect the port without inserting tools.Look for obvious lint, moisture or damage. Do not scrape the contacts with metal, spray cleaner into the port or force a loose connector.
  3. Use reMarkable's stated limits. Its current Paper Pro battery page recommends a 5-15W wall charger that does not exceed 5V and 3A, or the USB port of a working computer. Use a standard, undamaged USB-C cable.
  4. Test one known-good cable.Confirm the cable charges another device, then connect it directly. Avoid hubs and loose adapters while diagnosing the problem.
  5. Leave the connection undisturbed.reMarkable says 0% to 90% normally takes about 90 minutes. A deeply discharged or faulting unit may not follow that timetable, so record what changes after 30 and 90 minutes instead of repeatedly unplugging it.
  6. Compare a computer USB port.reMarkable explicitly calls this a safe power source. If the tablet wakes here, that result points to the previous cable or wall setup, but it does not prove every slow USB port is a cure.
  7. Try one controlled restart. After the tablet has had time on a confirmed source, hold the power button for 30 seconds, release it, wait briefly and press it for about three seconds. If it returns to a starting loop, use the separate Yeinks startup guide instead of repeating the sequence.
Tentative owner workaround

Some owners report that a direct computer USB port revived a deeply discharged Paper Pro when a higher-powered setup did not. The comparison is reversible and matches reMarkable's safe-source guidance, but it is not an official diagnosis. If charge still falls or the fault returns, treat that as evidence for support rather than a reason to keep swapping chargers.

PROTECT YOUR NOTES

Check what reached the cloud before repair or replacement

If the Paper Pro turns on long enough to sync, leave Wi-Fi on and use Settings → Cloud → Check sync. Then open the reMarkable desktop app and my.remarkable.com to compare a recent notebook's page count and last recognizable edit.

  1. Export the important cloud copies.Save critical notebooks as PDF from the desktop app. A PDF is a readable safety copy, not a complete editable backup.
  2. Record any gap.If the newest pages are on the tablet but not online, tell support before accepting a reset or replacement.
  3. Do not delete or unpair.Cloud deletion and account changes cannot repair charging hardware. They can make it harder to tell which copy is newest.
  4. Keep the serial number private.Photograph the screen and charging setup if useful, but send account, order and serial details only through reMarkable's support route.

If the tablet never powers on, the desktop or web library still tells you what was synchronized before the fault. It cannot retrieve work that never left the tablet, so be explicit about missing recent notes.

WHAT NOT TO TRY

A reset does not fix the charging path

Do not factory-reset a Paper Pro simply because the battery is not rising. A reset erases local data and changes software state, while the cable, port, power input and battery remain the same. Official software recovery can help an unresponsive software installation, but it should follow a successful power test and cloud check, not replace them.

Do not drain it on purpose

A complete discharge adds another variable and can make recovery harder.

Do not open the tablet

The battery is built in. Unauthorized repair can create a safety risk and affect warranty coverage.

Do not use random firmware

Developer mode and unofficial images do not diagnose whether power reaches the battery.

Do not chase wattage

Use reMarkable's published 5V limit instead of assuming a larger number is a better test.

If the device now reaches a repeated Paper tablet is starting or restarting screen, follow the Paper Pro startup-loop guide. It explains the official keep-data recovery route and the point to stop.

WHEN TO ESCALATE

Give support one clean set of results

Contact reMarkable when the tablet has no response on two known-good supported charging paths, loses battery while idle and connected, charges only intermittently, becomes warm, or repeats the fault after apparently recovering. Include the starting and ending percentage, elapsed time, charger output printed on the adapter, cables and ports tested, any icon or light response, recent impact or moisture, installed software version if known, and whether the latest notes are visible online.

reMarkable's current limited warranty covers manufacturing defects for one year and sits alongside any mandatory consumer rights in your country. Protection Plan eligibility depends on when the device was bought. Orders from remarkable.com also have a 50-day satisfaction guarantee, while retailer refunds follow the retailer's process. Check the live terms instead of assuming an owner report matches your purchase.

If support suggests software recovery, use only reMarkable's official recovery page and choose the keep-user-data option first. If the tablet will not remain powered or connected, stop rather than forcing repeated recoveries.
