reMarkable Paper Pro stuck on ‘restarting’ or ‘starting’?

Give the tablet time, protect anything already in the cloud, then use one controlled restart. If it still cannot reach My files, reMarkable has an official recovery route that can reinstall the software while keeping user data.

QUICK ANSWER

Do not jump straight to factory reset.

If a Paper Pro stays on Paper tablet is restarting or starting, keep it connected to a reliable USB-C power source and wait. An E-Ink image can remain visible when the tablet has very little power, so the screen alone does not prove an update is still running.

After it has charged, try one controlled restart. If it returns to the same screen, check the reMarkable web or desktop app for your latest files. Then use only reMarkable’s official Software recovery page. Choose the option that keeps user data first. If the tablet is not detected or recovery fails again, stop and contact reMarkable.

IDENTIFY THE STATE

“Starting” does not always mean the same failure

Recent Paper Pro owners have reported a device remaining on the restarting screen after an update, a startup screen that eventually cleared after charging, and recovery attempts that could not keep the USB connection. Those reports confirm the symptom, but they do not show one universal cause or failure rate.

Before pressing anything again, record what happened immediately before the screen appeared, how long it has remained unchanged, whether the reading light flashes, whether a computer notices a USB device and whether the tablet becomes warm. That evidence separates a low battery, a temporary restart, a boot loop and a failed recovery connection.

Screen is static, no light or USB responsePower may be too low

Leave it on a known-good USB-C power source before trying one controlled restart.

Screen or reading light changes, then returns to StartingRepeatable boot loop

Stop repeated button presses. Confirm cloud files, then consider official recovery.

Computer detects recovery modeRecovery path is available

Choose reMarkable’s keep-user-data option first.

Recovery cannot find the deviceCable, port or device fault

Try one direct port and known-good data cable, then contact reMarkable.

Temperature changes the advice.

If the Paper Pro becomes unusually hot, swells, smells unusual or has visible damage, disconnect it from power and move it away from flammable material. Do not continue software recovery. Contact reMarkable.

SAFE FIRST STEPS

Charge, wait, then restart once

  1. Remove the Folio and Marker. This makes the power button and USB-C port easy to inspect. It also removes accessories as a distraction while you observe the tablet.
  2. Use a known-good cable and direct power source.Leave the tablet connected without repeatedly unplugging it. A cable that charges another device may still lack a reliable data connection, which matters later for recovery.
  3. Give it time.If the battery may be empty, allow at least an hour before judging the static E-Ink screen. One recent owner report describes a device that reached startup normally after roughly an hour on charge.
  4. Try one controlled restart.Hold the power button for 30 seconds, release it, wait briefly, then press for about three seconds. This is also the button sequence reMarkable uses to activate recovery mode on supported models.
  5. Watch one full attempt.Do not keep tapping the button while the display flashes or redraws. If it returns to the same starting screen, move on instead of repeating the cycle all day.
Tentative owner checks

A different cable, a direct computer port and a longer charge have helped some owners distinguish a flat tablet from a recovery problem. These are low-risk comparisons, not proven fixes for an update failure. Rapidly plugging and unplugging the device, waiting for the battery to drain completely or using unofficial button sequences adds uncertainty without protecting your notes.

PROTECT YOUR FILES

Check the cloud before rewriting the software

On a phone or computer, sign in to the reMarkable web app or open the desktop or mobile app. Compare a recent notebook’s page count and last recognizable edit. reMarkable’s transfer guidance specifically tells owners to confirm files in an app or at my.remarkable.com before a factory reset.

  1. Record what is available.Note the newest notebook and its last synced page. If the web library is older than the tablet was before the restart, assume the missing work exists only on the tablet.
  2. Export critical cloud copies.Download a PDF of important files that are already accessible. It is a readable safety copy, not a complete editable backup.
  3. Do not delete or unpair anything.Changing the cloud library cannot repair a tablet that will not boot, and it may remove the only accessible copy.
  4. Tell support about any sync gap.If the newest work is missing online, say so before accepting a factory reset or replacement. Ask whether the keep-data recovery path is appropriate.

OFFICIAL SOFTWARE RECOVERY

Use reMarkable’s tool and keep user data first

reMarkable says Software recovery completely reinstalls the tablet software and can work even when the device is unresponsive. It can take up to 20 minutes. The official tool currently supports Paper Pro, Paper Pro Move and Paper Pure, but not reMarkable 2.

  1. Read the live official page first. The requirements and downloads can change. At the time of checking, Windows required reMarkable desktop app 3.14.1 or newer. Mac required macOS 12 or newer and reMarkable’s own recovery download.
  2. Use a direct USB connection.Keep the cable connected for the whole recovery. Avoid a loose adapter or dock.
  3. Enter recovery mode exactly once.reMarkable’s current sequence is a 30-second power-button hold followed shortly by a three-second press. The Mac path may give no visible confirmation on the tablet.
  4. Choose Restore data or restore. This is the keep-user-data option. Do not choose Factory reset or reset unless you understand that it erases user data and have confirmed the cloud copy.
  5. Let recovery finish.Keep the app or official tool running. The display may turn on and off several times. Do not disconnect the cable because the screen looks inactive.
Recovery is not the same as an ordinary restart.

It reinstalls the system software. The keep-data option reduces the risk to user files, but it is still a significant repair step. If your newest work is not in the cloud, contact support before starting. Never substitute an unofficial image, downgrade utility or community flashing command.

WHEN TO ESCALATE

Stop after one failed official recovery

reMarkable’s own guidance says to restart an interrupted recovery and keep the cable connected, then contact support if the software still cannot be recovered. A different direct USB port and one known-good data cable are sensible checks. Repeating a failing process across many unofficial tools is not.

Give support the exact model, the message on screen, the approximate time the update or restart began, the installed version if known, whether the reading light or display changes, whether recovery detects the tablet, the computer and operating-system version, and whether the latest files are visible in the cloud. Share serial numbers and logs only through reMarkable’s private support route.

Do not claim the update definitely caused the fault unless reMarkable confirms it for your device. A recent report can establish timing, but a low battery, interrupted write, cable problem or hardware fault can produce a similar result.
