reMarkable note won’t open or shows low memory?

First find out whether the document still opens in the reMarkable web or desktop app. Export that readable copy before changing the tablet. Then check whether one file, several files or the whole device is affected.

QUICK ANSWER

Protect the readable copy, then test one file at a time.

If the note or PDF opens in reMarkable’s web or desktop app, export it before troubleshooting the tablet. On the tablet, check available storage, close the document, restart normally once, install any official update, then try a small known-good notebook or PDF.

Do not delete the original, empty Trash, unpair the tablet, downgrade its software or factory-reset it. A recent owner workaround is to duplicate a stuck document from a surface where it is visible, but reMarkable has not documented that as a fix. Keep the original and verify the duplicate page by page.

FIRST, PROTECT THE FILE

A file that opens elsewhere is your best starting point

Recent owner reports describe notes that remain on a loading animation and a separate “low memory” message while opening or paging documents. The reports cover reMarkable 2, Paper Pro Move and Paper Pro. They do not establish one shared cause or show how common either symptom is.

  1. Stop editing the affected document.Close it on other tablets and apps so a partial or stale copy is not mistaken for the latest one.
  2. Check the web or desktop app.Open the same document away from the tablet. Record its title, page count and last visible edit.
  3. Export a readable safety copy.Use PDF, PNG or SVG as appropriate, save it outside the reMarkable library and open the exported file. An export preserves readable content, but it is not a fully editable reMarkable backup.
  4. Keep the original untouched.Do not delete, rename repeatedly or empty Trash while the cause is unclear.
Individual page deletion can be permanent.

reMarkable’s navigation guidance says deleted files go to Trash, but an individual deleted page skips Trash. Do not trim pages as a memory test unless an independent copy is complete and you actually want those pages removed.

IDENTIFY THE PATTERN

“Won’t open” and “low memory” are symptoms, not diagnoses

A tiny file can contain a complex page, while a large file can open normally. File size alone does not identify the fault. Use one affected file and one small known-good file to separate a document problem from a wider tablet problem.

SAFE, REVERSIBLE CHECKS

Change one thing, then repeat the same test

  1. Record the exact symptom.Photograph the message or loading screen. Note the tablet model, software version, document type, document size and whether another app can open it.
  2. Check Storage.Open Settings and Storage. Record the available space rather than guessing from the document size. In My files, reMarkable lets you sort by file size to identify unusually large items.
  3. Close the file and restart normally once.Use the ordinary power menu. Wait for My files to load fully, then try the small known-good file before the affected one.
  4. Check for an official update.Go to Settings, Software, Version, then Check for updates. Install only the version offered to your tablet and let it use the normal restart prompt.
  5. Test a controlled document.Create a blank one-page notebook or import a small simple PDF. If it opens while the original does not, stop treating the whole tablet as broken.
  6. Reduce storage safely if it is genuinely tight.Export and verify unneeded large files before moving them to Trash. Connect subscribers can archive eligible unused files online. Do not empty Trash until every important item exists somewhere independent.
A normal restart is not a factory reset.

It should not erase notebooks. Still, protect the readable copy first because a restart cannot rescue content that was never synced or exported.

TENTATIVE WORKAROUND

Duplicating the document may create an openable copy

On October 25, one owner reported that duplicating a stuck note produced a copy that opened. Other owners in the same discussion reported the loading problem, but this workaround is not in reMarkable’s published troubleshooting and it may not help a damaged, unsynced or storage-starved document.

Try this only after export
  1. Use the web or desktop app only if it can display the full source document.
  2. Export and open an independent safety copy.
  3. Duplicate the document, keeping the original.
  4. Open the duplicate and check the first page, last page, page count and newest edit.
  5. If it fails or differs, stop. Do not make repeated copies.

For a source PDF that is safely stored on your computer, re-importing that known-good source as a separate file is lower risk than modifying the stuck tablet copy. Annotations made only on the reMarkable will not be present in the original source PDF.

WHAT NOT TO TRY

Do not trade a loading problem for lost work

Do not delete the only copy

A cloud icon or visible filename does not prove that every recent page reached another device.

Do not empty Trash

Freeing space is only useful after each important file has been exported and checked elsewhere.

Do not downgrade

Owner reports speculate about recent software, but reMarkable does not publish downgrade steps as a remedy for this symptom.

Do not factory-reset

A reset can erase local work and does not prove whether one document, storage pressure or software caused the failure.

Avoid developer-mode “repairs.”

Developer mode can require a factory reset and exposes system-level access. It is not a safe first-line response to a document that will not open.

WHEN TO ESCALATE

Contact reMarkable when the controlled test stays broken

Contact support when several unrelated files fail, the low-memory message returns after one normal restart and an official update, My files becomes unstable, or the affected document cannot be opened or exported from any connected surface.

Send the tablet model, software version, exact message, available-storage reading, document type and size, approximate page count, time of the last successful open, result in the web or desktop app, result with a small known-good document, and a photo or short video. Tell support which surface has the newest readable copy. Share account details and serial numbers only in the private support conversation.

Official guidance and reporting limits

Current reMarkable support material and recent owner discussions were checked on October 27, 2026. Owner reports were used to identify the symptoms and a tentative duplication workaround, not to assign a cause or failure rate. reMarkable’s public release notes do not identify a confirmed low-memory or stuck-document defect. Yeinks has not reproduced either symptom.
