reMarkable Marker not charging or connecting?

First check that you have the rechargeable Marker made for Paper Pro, Paper Pro Move or Paper Pure. Then test the tablet's power, magnetic attachment and official update path before assuming the pen is dead.

QUICK ANSWER

Charge the tablet first, then reseat the correct Marker.

The current Marker and Marker Plus charge wirelessly when magnetically attached to reMarkable Paper Pro, Paper Pro Move or Paper Pure. Make sure the tablet itself has enough power, remove and reattach the Marker in its normal charging position, then leave it alone for at least five minutes. reMarkable says that should normally provide about one hour of Marker use.

If the tablet shows not connected, the Marker stays at 0%, or it is connected but never starts charging, restart the tablet once with the Marker detached. Reattach it after the home screen loads, check for official tablet and Marker updates, and record what happens. Do not hit, bend, open or factory-reset anything. A persistent failure is a support or warranty case, not a reason to experiment with the Marker battery.

IDENTIFY THE STATE

Separate charging, connection and writing faults

Recent owner reports include Markers that show connected but not charging, units stuck at 0%, and pens that stop being detected after previously working. Those reports confirm the symptom, but they do not establish a shared cause or failure rate.

Open Marker settings and note the exact message, battery percentage and time. Then test whether finger touch still works on the tablet. A working touchscreen with a missing Marker narrows the problem to the pen, its charging connection or the pen-input system. If the whole tablet is unresponsive, use the relevant tablet charging or startup guide first.

Not connectedThe tablet does not recognize the Marker

Confirm the active Marker family, tablet power and magnetic attachment.

Connected, not chargingThe tablet sees the Marker but power is not rising

Leave it correctly attached to a charged tablet, then compare after one restart.

Battery stays at 0%The Marker may be deeply discharged or faulty

Keep the tablet powered, record the time and status, then escalate if it does not change.

Connected and charged, no inkThis is no longer mainly a charging problem

Test a fresh official tip and use the general pen checklist.

This guide does not apply to the reMarkable 2 Marker.

The reMarkable 2 pen uses passive EMR technology and does not need charging. It is also not compatible with Paper Pro, Paper Pro Move or Paper Pure. For an unpowered pen or a charged Marker that still will not write, use the cross-brand pen checklist.

SAFE CHECKS

Change one part of the charging path at a time

  1. Confirm the exact tablet and Marker.Use the active Marker or Marker Plus sold for the current Paper family. A reMarkable 2 Marker and generic EMR pens will not substitute for it.
  2. Power the tablet itself. The Marker receives power from the tablet. If the tablet battery is low, connect the Paper Pro to reMarkable's supported 5-15W, 5V source or a working computer USB port before judging the pen.
  3. Remove and reattach the Marker once.Place it in the normal magnetic charging position and make sure it sits flat. Watch Marker settings for a connection or charging change instead of repeatedly snapping it on and off.
  4. Leave it undisturbed.Wait at least five minutes on a powered tablet. If it began at 0%, give it longer and record the status after 15 and 30 minutes. Time is evidence; repeated handling is not.
  5. Restart once with the Marker detached.Use the tablet's normal restart. Wait for the home screen to load fully, then attach the Marker and recheck its battery status.
  6. Remove unrelated magnetic accessories for one test.Set third-party covers and loose magnetic objects aside, then repeat the attachment check. This is a reversible isolation step, not a confirmed repair.
Tentative owner workaround

Some owners say a careful realignment or restarting with the Marker detached restored detection. Both tests are reversible, but reMarkable does not publish them as guaranteed fixes. If the problem returns, treat the result as useful evidence for support.

FIRMWARE AND NIBS

Update through the tablet, not a downloaded pen file

reMarkable delivers Marker firmware through the paper tablet. First check Settings → Software → Version → Check for updates. When the tablet has downloaded a Marker update, it shows a Marker update available notification. Open Marker settings from that notice and install the update there.

If an update appears but the Marker remains at 0%, keep it attached to the powered tablet before trying again. Do not search for a standalone Marker firmware file or use developer tools. If the official update will not start after the Marker has had time to charge, send the exact message and software version to support.

A worn tip is a separate issue. Replace it only when the Marker is connected and charged but strokes are missing or the tip is visibly blunt. reMarkable says to pull the old tip out with your fingers and insert a compatible official tip. A new tip cannot fix not connected or a battery that will not charge.

WHAT NOT TO TRY

Do not turn a replaceable accessory into a safety risk

Do not hit or bend it

Impact can damage the battery, charging coil or body and may complicate a warranty claim.

Do not open it

reMarkable says not to service the Marker yourself. There is no user-replaceable battery inside.

Do not use loose magnets

Rubbing or stacking magnets is not an approved charging method and adds another source of interference or damage.

Do not factory-reset the tablet

A reset risks local data and does not repair a failed Marker battery or charging circuit.

Stop immediately for battery damage.

If the Marker is unusually warm, swollen, leaking, cracked after impact or smells odd, detach it and keep it away from heat and combustible material. Do not charge, open or ship it through the ordinary returns process. Follow reMarkable's safety and support instructions for damaged batteries.

WHEN TO ESCALATE

Give reMarkable one clean set of results

Contact reMarkable if a compatible Marker is still not detected, stays at 0% or shows connected without charging after a charged tablet, correct attachment, undisturbed wait, one restart and current official software. Also escalate a Marker update that repeatedly fails or a fault that returns after temporary recovery.

Send the tablet model, Marker or Marker Plus, tablet software version, exact status message, starting and ending battery percentage, time attached, whether finger touch works, whether the tablet itself was connected to power, and any recent impact or liquid exposure. Keep serial numbers and order details inside the private support conversation.

reMarkable's current limited warranty covers its accessories for one year against eligible material and workmanship defects, while consumable tips are excluded. Local consumer rights may add separate protection. For an accepted Paper Pro Marker claim, reMarkable says the faulty Marker must be returned. Follow the case instructions and send only the item support requests.
