QUICK ANSWER
Remove the folio, change surfaces and watch the timing.
Wake the Manta with its power button, place it bare on a plain non-metal surface and keep it actively in use for two minutes. Move phones, laptops, magnetic straps, stands, chargers and cases away for this test. If it stays awake, add the folio and nearby objects back one at a time.
If it still sleeps while you are writing or tapping, check Settings → Battery → Auto Sleep and Auto Power Off, restart normally once and record the full Chauvet version. On October 23, 2026, Supernote listed Chauvet 3.31.45 as the current Manta and Nomad release. A repeatable fault on a bare, current Manta needs a video and system logs, not a factory reset.
FIND THE TRIGGER
The moment it sleeps is more useful than a theory
A recent Manta owner reported that a new device worked after booting but returned to sleep within seconds after its first sleep-and-wake cycle. A restart and update check did not settle the case. Older Manta and Nomad reports show different patterns, including sleep tied to a particular surface, folio behavior or power setting. That supports a short isolation test, but it does not establish one shared defect.
If the timing matches the Battery setting while the tablet is idle, the device may be following its configured timer.
Test the bare Manta on a plain non-metal surface, then add the folio and nearby objects back one at a time.
Record the active pen or touch input and the moment the sleep screen appears. Restart once, then escalate if it repeats.
Note the full Chauvet version and exact sequence. A restart can clear a temporary state, but it does not prove the cause.
Use a clock for one test. If the Manta sleeps at the exact interval selected under Auto Sleep and no input was made, the timer is the first explanation to check. If the sleep screen appears during continuous pen or touch input, capture that behavior because it is more useful to support than a general report that the device feels unreliable.
SAFE, REVERSIBLE CHECKS
Change one condition at a time
- Protect current notes.Confirm important files open, then sync or export through your usual trusted route. Check the copy before experimenting with settings.
- Test the Manta bare.Remove the folio, keyboard, stand, pen loop and other accessories. Put the device on a plain wood, paper or fabric surface rather than a metal table or another electronic device.
- Clear the immediate area.Move laptops, phones, magnetic watch straps, MagSafe accessories, speakers, wireless chargers and power banks away. This is an isolation test, not a claim that one of them has damaged the Manta.
- Wake with the power button.Do not rely on tapping the sleeping E-Ink screen. Supernote says the touchscreen and EMR input are inactive during sleep, so they cannot provide an ordinary tap-to-wake route.
- Keep the device genuinely active.Open a disposable note and alternate short pen strokes with finger taps for two minutes. Record whether the sleep screen appears during input, after input stops or at a fixed interval.
- Reintroduce one item at a time.If the bare test passes, add the folio first, then the usual surface and nearby accessories separately. Stop when the symptom returns instead of changing several variables together.
- Restart normally once.Use the power menu and choose Restart. Let startup finish, then repeat the same bare-device test. Avoid a cycle of long-press reboots.
If one folio, stand or location reliably triggers sleep, leave it out of use and send Supernote the exact comparison. Do not cut, shield or add magnets to the folio before support identifies the problem.
SOFTWARE AND SETTINGS
Check the timers before changing firmware
Open Settings → Battery and note the selected Auto Sleep and Auto Power Off times. Set a longer Auto Sleep interval for one controlled test if the current value is too short. This confirms whether the observed timing follows the setting. It is not a cure for a Manta that sleeps during active input.
Next, record the complete version under Settings. Supernote's current stable changelog lists Chauvet 3.31.45 and says over-the-air updates use a staged rollout. The same history records an earlier fix for occasional failure to wake from sleep, but it does not say every current sleep symptom has one software cause.
If the Manta offers the current stable release, protect important files, connect to Wi-Fi and use Settings → System → Check. Supernote recommends the on-device route first. If an update is not offered, wait for the staged rollout or ask support whether the official manual package is appropriate for this case.
Supernote warns that installing an older firmware version on your own can leave the device stuck in a boot loop or unresponsive. Do not join beta, reuse an old package or guess at a rollback to troubleshoot sleep behavior.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Do not turn a sleep fault into a data or hardware fault
- Do not factory-reset as an opening step. It can remove local data and settings without proving whether a timer, accessory, sensor or software state caused the sleep.
- Do not keep forcing restarts. One normal restart is a useful comparison. Repeated long presses add interruption without creating better evidence.
- Do not hold a magnet near the frame to wake the tablet. That can change the symptom while confusing the diagnosis.
- Do not open the back, adjust a sensor or modify the folio. The Manta is designed with repairability in mind, but internal work should follow case-specific Supernote instructions.
- Do not post serial numbers or private note contents. Send them only through a private support channel when requested.
If the Manta does not wake at all, stays on one page or shows no response to pen, touch or the power button, use the separate Manta frozen checklist. A static E-Ink page is a different symptom from a device that wakes and then deliberately returns to sleep.
WHEN TO STOP
A bare Manta that sleeps during input needs support
Contact Supernote or the retailer if the Manta repeatedly enters sleep while the pen or touchscreen is active, the problem survives one normal restart and the current stable release, the power button feels stuck, or a brand-new unit cannot stay awake. Stop using and disconnect the device if it becomes unusually hot, swells or shows physical damage.
Record a short video showing the device waking, continuous input and the unexpected sleep screen. Include the full Chauvet version, Auto Sleep and Auto Power Off values, battery level, whether the folio was attached, the surface used, nearby accessories, the exact time and whether a restart changed anything. Submit it through Settings → Feedback with system logs and keep the case ID.

Supernote documentation and owner reports were checked on October 23, 2026. Supernote confirms the power settings, supported wake behavior, stable update route, firmware warning and Feedback/log process. Owner reports support the symptom and isolation tests but do not establish prevalence, one root cause or a guaranteed remedy. Yeinks has not reproduced the issue on hardware.
