QUICK ANSWER
Stop writing, then hold the power button for 40 seconds.
If the screen stops responding, do not keep adding pen strokes that may not save. Amazon's restart method is to hold the power button until the dialog appears or the screen goes blank, continue holding for 40 seconds, then release. A restart does not erase notebooks or deregister the Kindle.
When the Scribe starts again, sync while it is responsive, compare its installed software with Amazon's page for your exact model, and test a new blank notebook plus another book or document. If a new notebook also freezes, the problem returns after updating, or recent writing disappears, contact Amazon. Do not factory-reset first.
IDENTIFY THE PATTERN
“Frozen” can mean four different things
Recent Scribe owners have described page turns that stop while the pen still draws, notebooks that freeze at a particular page, reading highlights that lock the interface and Colorsoft models that turn white. Those reports show a real troubleshooting need, but they do not establish one shared cause or failure rate.
After syncing, compare a new blank notebook. Keep the affected notebook untouched and report any missing strokes.
Test another downloaded title. Remove and redownload only the affected item if the source copy is safe.
Restart, check the exact-model software page and contact Amazon if a new blank notebook also locks up.
Charge for at least 30 minutes, try one 40-second restart and escalate if the device never reaches Home.
Before changing anything, note what was open, the action immediately before the freeze, whether the pen still worked, whether the last strokes returned after restart and the software version under Settings > Device Options > Device Info. A repeatable pattern is more useful to support than a guess about the cause.
SAFE RECOVERY
Restart without erasing the Scribe
- Stop adding notes. If writing still appears but menus and page turns do not respond, treat new strokes as unsaved. Pause rather than filling the frozen page.
- Try the normal power menu once.Hold the power button until the menu appears, then choose Restart. If the menu never appears, continue with the forced restart.
- Hold for the full 40 seconds.Amazon says to keep holding even after the screen goes blank, then release. Wait for the charge light and startup sequence.
- If it is stuck at startup, charge first.Use a known-good cable and power source for at least 30 minutes, then try the 40-second restart once more. A flat battery and a software freeze can look similar on an E-Ink screen.
- Let startup finish. An E-Ink image can remain visible without power. Give the device time to reach Home before pressing the button repeatedly.
Amazon says it removes personal data, downloaded content and anything that has not synced, then deregisters the Kindle. It also did not cure every owner-reported freeze. Use it only after protecting your content and when Amazon support recommends it for your case.
ISOLATE ONE VARIABLE
Find out whether the freeze follows content or the device
- Check the exact-model software page.Compare Device Info with Amazon's current Kindle E-Reader software list. Identify the model before downloading anything. Never install a package for another Scribe or use an unofficial downgrade.
- Sync while the Scribe is stable.Open Quick Actions and choose Sync. Then confirm recent notebook pages in the Kindle app where available. If the latest strokes are missing, stop and contact Amazon before deleting or redownloading anything.
- Test a new blank notebook.Write a few harmless lines, change page once, close it and reopen it. If this works while one existing notebook freezes, preserve the affected notebook and report the difference.
- Test another book or document. If the freeze appeared while reading or highlighting, open a different downloaded Kindle book. If only one file fails, keep the original source before removing its local download.
- Check available storage.Open Storage Management and record the free space for support. Do not bulk-delete books or notebooks based on an unproven threshold.
Some owners saw fewer freezes in Airplane mode, in a new notebook, or when they paused heavy highlighting. These are short diagnostic comparisons, not confirmed fixes. Sync important work first because Airplane mode pauses backup. Do not assume a large Vocabulary Builder list, a long notebook or one firmware version is the cause unless Amazon confirms it for your case.
PROTECT YOUR NOTES
Do not turn a freeze into data loss
A forced restart can end a stuck session before the newest strokes have synced. Several 2026 owner reports describe writing that appeared on the frozen screen but was absent after reboot. That is a warning signal, not proof that every freeze damages a notebook.
- Confirm what reached the Kindle app.Amazon says the Scribe and app need an internet connection for notebook content to reflect recent edits. Refresh or reopen the notebook in the app after syncing.
- Export critical work while the device is responsive.Use the sharing options available on your exact Scribe model. Keep the exported file separately before more troubleshooting.
- Leave the affected notebook intact.Do not delete it, duplicate pages repeatedly or remove it from the device unless you have verified the cloud copy and Amazon advises the step.
- Keep a simple incident note.Record the time, model, software version, notebook or title, page number, free storage and what happened after restart. Do not post account details or private device logs publicly.
Amazon's notebook help page includes removing and redownloading a notebook for certain template problems. That is not a general freeze cure. For a notebook with recent or uncertain sync, preservation comes first.
WHEN TO ESCALATE
Recurring freezes deserve Amazon support
Contact Amazon if the Scribe freezes again after a full restart and current update, a new blank notebook also locks up, the screen turns white repeatedly, writing disappears, the device cannot reach Home, or the problem started on a new device still inside its return period. One January 2026 Colorsoft owner reported that a factory reset did not stop repeated white-screen crashes; Amazon Staff directed that case to customer support.
Tell support the exact model, serial number privately, installed software, remaining storage, whether one or all notebooks are affected, whether a different book freezes, what Airplane mode changed, and whether recent strokes survived. Ask support to confirm before a reset, replacement or content removal.
Disconnect power, move it away from flammable material and contact Amazon. Software troubleshooting is not appropriate for a visibly damaged or overheating battery.
