QUICK ANSWER
A brief black-white flash is usually the full refresh doing its job.
On a BOOX device, Regal mode favors a cleaner settled page over the smoothest interaction. If the screen flashes after nearly every tap or page turn, check the refresh controls for that app or document before assuming the panel is faulty. In NeoReader, open the document, tap the center, choose Refresh, and inspect Full Refresh Rate. A value of 1 can produce a full refresh after every action.
Raise the interval by a small amount and test the same pages again. More actions between full refreshes can reduce flashing, but BOOX warns that ghosting can build up. If the display redraws repeatedly while nothing is happening, or the settled image stays broken after a manual full refresh, record a video and contact BOOX.
WHAT YOU ARE SEEING
Flicker and ghosting sit on opposite sides of the same choice
E-Ink does not redraw like an LCD or OLED screen. A partial update can change the page quickly, but faint traces of the previous image may remain. A full refresh drives the panel through a more obvious black-white cycle to clean those traces. That visible cycle is the flash.
Recent BOOX owner reports describe everything from an occasional page-turn flash to a full redraw after almost every touch. They also report mixed results across models and firmware builds. Those reports are useful signals, not proof that every BOOX has the same bug. BOOX's current help pages split controls between EinkWise, which can remember display settings per app, and NeoReader, which has its own document refresh settings.
A single flash during a page turn is therefore different from continuous redraws while the page is idle. The first can be expected behaviour. The second needs a controlled test and, if repeatable, a support report.
FIND THE TRIGGER
Test one app and one action at a time
Do not change every EinkWise slider at once. First open the app or document where the problem is easiest to reproduce. Note the BOOX model, full firmware build, selected refresh mode and exactly what triggers the flash: a page turn, a tap, scrolling, lifting the pen, opening a menu, or nothing at all.
Likely a scheduled full refresh
Increase the interval slightly only if the flashing is too distracting, then watch for more ghosting.
Check Full Refresh Rate
The document may be set to refresh after one action. Compare a higher value without applying it to every document.
Mode trade-off
Regal is prioritizing a cleaner settled page. Speed is the useful comparison when motion matters more than maximum clarity.
Not explained by page-turn frequency
Restart once, record the behaviour and send BOOX the model, build, app and video.
Then open a simple local document in NeoReader and compare it with the affected third-party app. If only one app flashes excessively, its per-app EinkWise profile is the stronger lead. If NeoReader and unrelated apps behave the same way, keep the system mode and firmware build in your notes for BOOX.
REVERSIBLE CHECKS
Make the smallest useful adjustment
- Trigger one manual full refresh.Use the Control Center, Navigation Ball, navigation bar or configured gesture. Let the screen settle. If the image is then clean, you are dealing with refresh behaviour rather than a permanent mark.
- Check the document setting in NeoReader.Tap the center of the document, open Refresh, and note the mode plus Full Refresh Rate. If the rate is 1, move it only a little higher and keep Apply to All Documents off for the first test.
- Repeat the same page turns.Use the same file and perform five to ten page turns or taps. Count the flashes and check the settled page for ghosting. This gives you a result you can compare instead of a vague impression.
- Compare Speed mode briefly. If Regal still interrupts scrolling or repeated taps, try Speed on the same content. Speed should respond more smoothly, but the image may be less clean. This is a comparison, not a claim that Speed fixes the firmware.
- Check the affected app's EinkWise profile.Open EinkWise from the Control Center while the app is active. Menu names differ by model. Look for the selected mode and any full-refresh-after-tap or full-refresh-after-drag controls. Increase the interval slightly rather than turning every cleanup action off.
- Restart once.If a setting appears stuck or changed without explanation, restart the BOOX normally and repeat the same test. Do not cycle through repeated restarts.
Reducing full refreshes can make interaction calmer, but it can also leave more afterimages. Choose the least distracting balance for the content you are using, then keep one manual full-refresh control within reach.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Do not turn a display setting into a data-loss problem
A factory reset is not a sensible first test for a repeatable Regal-mode flash. It can remove local files, app data and settings while leaving the same display trade-off in place. Do not install an unofficial firmware image or use a downgrade tool from a forum. BOOX firmware packages are model-specific, and the refresh behaviour can differ between builds.
Avoid pressing, flexing or rubbing the panel to “clear” it. If a line, block or fixed image remains after a full refresh, follow the separate BOOX screen-line checklist and protect the device from pressure. If the page is clean after a full refresh but leaves faint traces between them, the broader E-Ink ghosting guide explains what is normal.
WHEN TO STOP
Give BOOX a short, repeatable case
Contact BOOX when full redraws continue while the page is idle, occur across unrelated apps despite a higher refresh interval, began immediately after an update and survive one normal restart, or leave the settled screen unusable. BOOX asks for the device model, serial number, firmware version, a description, and photos or video where possible.
Record 20 to 30 seconds showing the app, the action that triggers the flash and the settled result. Include the exact refresh mode, Full Refresh Rate, whether the setting applies to one document or all documents, and whether Speed behaves differently. Use on-device Feedback with logs if your firmware offers it, or BOOX's official support form. Share the serial number privately with support, not in a public forum.
SOURCES AND LIMITS
What is confirmed
Current BOOX guidance and recent owner reports were checked on October 12, 2026. BOOX confirms that NeoReader offers Regal and Speed modes, that Full Refresh Rate controls how often a full refresh follows an action, and that allowing more actions between full refreshes can increase ghosting. BOOX also warns that EinkWise menus vary by model. Owner reports were used to identify repeatable symptoms and useful comparisons, not to estimate how common the issue is. Yeinks has not reproduced the behaviour on a device.
