This review combines three written reviews, two video assessments and three owner discussions. Because the model is new, long-term owner evidence is still limited. We compared its display, writing, battery, price and official specifications with the front-lit Scribe.
The charts show how often a theme appeared across the 8 sources we coded. They are directional, not scientific scores. A report can reveal a problem, but it cannot tell us how common that problem is.
THE SHORT VERSION
A good Scribe with one missing feature that defines where you can use it.
This model keeps the fast 11-inch display, excellent included pen, Kindle library and current Scribe notebook software. It is thin, relatively light and delivers strong battery life. In a bright office or outdoors, the screen looks clean and writing feels responsive.
Removing the front light saves about $70 at launch, but makes evening reading, dim meeting rooms and travel less convenient. Reviewers did not consistently find the writing improvement large enough to compensate.

DISPLAY & DESIGN
Clean in daylight, surprisingly dull in an ordinary room
The 11-inch monochrome display renders text at 300ppi and removes the light-guide layer used by the illuminated model. In theory that places the pen closer to the E-Ink panel, but at least one month-long reviewer could not feel a meaningful improvement.
What is obvious is the missing illumination. The panel can look excellent by a window or under a desk lamp, then noticeably gray in a dim room. At about 400g and 5.4mm thick, it remains comfortable for a large writing tablet, though not for long one-handed reading.
WRITING & SOFTWARE
Nearly the full Scribe experience, with the same simple limits
The included Premium Pen attaches magnetically, needs no charging and includes an eraser plus shortcut button. Palm rejection is reliable and the large page works well for journals, PDFs and sketches.
The software matches the other current Scribes, including searchable handwriting, notebook summaries and writing inside supported books. It remains a focused Kindle rather than an open tablet, with fewer organizational and export tools than Supernote or BOOX.
BATTERY
The easiest advantage to understand
Without LEDs drawing power, battery life is strong and reviews consistently treat endurance as a benefit. Actual runtime still depends on Wi-Fi, writing frequency and page activity, but this model removes brightness from the equation.
Amazon’s laboratory assumptions do not match intensive daily writing. Battery comparisons are more useful than a single promised number.

A sensible idea for a very specific, well-lit life.
The unlit Scribe is polished, quick and pleasant to write on. Nothing about the core device feels cheap, and people who work in studios, bright classrooms or beside windows may never miss the LEDs.
Most buyers will eventually read in bed, travel at night or enter a gloomy meeting room. For them, paying slightly more for the front light buys far more flexibility than the headline price difference suggests.
